Historical Note
The Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) of the South West Pacific Area, which was active during World War II, was a joint Australian-United States agency that disseminated intelligence on Japanese operations. They issued confidential reports based on captured documents, prisoner interrogations and other sources to inform the Allied forces. The reports in this collection once belonged to Colonel Karl Ferguson Baldwin, a career United States Army officer. Towards the end of World War II, he served as a military attache stationed in Melbourne, Australia, where he appears to have been engaged in studying the psychology of the Japanese military. He later became a professor of military science and tactics at the University of Kansas. His personal papers are located at Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont.
Content Description
The collection consists of 11 printed research reports prepared by the Allied Translator and Interpreter Section, South West Pacific Area, to assist military leaders. The reports belonged to Colonel Karl F. Baldwin, whose name is written or typed on most of the reports. They are marked with "Confidential" stamps and receipt stamps of the Office of the United States Military Attache in Melbourne, Australia. The reports center on Japanese military psychology, their readiness for battle and their knowledge of the United States military capabilities. Most of the reports list as sources, "Captured Documents" and "Statements by Prisoners of War."
