Historical Note
Joseph Henry Brown was born near Wilmington, Will County, Illinois, in 1837, and came overland to Oregon with his parents in 1847.
He served as an apprentice with the Oregon Statesman newspaper in Salem in the late 1850s. He joined the First Oregon Cavalry in 1861 and saw action in conflicts with Native Americans in eastern Oregon. He served as a clerk in the state legislature, and was employed as the Salem correspondent for the Oregonian newspaper.
In 1869 he married Margaret R. Graves, with whom he had four children, and around 1880 they moved to Portland.
Brown wrote monographs of histories of Oregon, and of "Indian wars in Oregon." The first volume of Political History of Oregon to 1848, was published in 1892, but subsequent volumes (1949-1860) remained unpublished due to Brown's ill health.

Content Description
Joseph Henry Brown "History of Indian Wars in Oregon and Washington" manuscript contains an unpublished manuscript by Brown that was intended as a companion to his Political History of Oregon to 1848.
The collection also contains pages from Brown's military reports from the 1855 Rogue River and Modoc Wars. The document titled "Modoc War" Brown describes his interpretation of the history and ethnology of the Modoc tribe of northern California and southern Oregon. He explains the natural environment surrounding Modoc homelands and their first encounters with whites. Brown asserts that in most interactions between Modocs and white traders and settlers, violent conflict has existed. He cites the source for this information as originating from Wigwam and Warpath by A.B. Meacham.
