Biographical Note
Nancy Perkins was the daughter of New York-born Frederick William Perkins and Helena, a Colville Indian woman. As the result of a childhood accident she was rendered deaf, but through sign-language and lip reading was able to communicate with family and friends, especially her maternal grandmother, Able One, who told Nancy the tribal myths and family stories. During the last part of her life, Wynecoop attempted to arrange and record these stories. House fires destroyed three successive manuscripts, and only this one survives.
Content Description
The collected consists of a typed manuscript of stories and myths told by Wynecoop, some completed by her daughter, Nettie M. Clark. Also included is an affectionate biography of Nancy Wynecoop, written by Clark.
