Historical Note

Rudolph Ernst Heine was appointed as the university's first Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering in 1901. The Electrical Engineering program was originally housed in Science Hall (later renamed Parrington Hall in 1931), which was completed in 1902. That same year, Stephen P. Rowell received the first B.S. in Electrical Engineering, making the Department of Electrical Engineering the second oldest degree program within the College of Engineering. The Department separated from the Physics Department in 1905 and Dr. Carl Magnusson was appointed its first Head.

In 1910 the Department moved to Old Engineering Hall (Machinery Hall), which was built in 1908 as the Machinery Pavilion for the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition. The first M.S.E.E. was awarded in 1913 and students were first offered the choice between majoring in electric power or electronics in 1925. The development of hydroelectrical power and the aluminum and aircraft industries in Western Washington fostered enrollment growth and the construction of a new building for the Department in 1948. The first Ph.D. was awarded in 1958 to Dr. Akira Ishimaru, a Professor Emeritus in the Department.
