Historical Note
Catherine McMahon (1873-1968) was born in County Kerry, Ireland, and came to Portland in 1900. With her husband, Michael Joseph McMahon (1868-1912), she had two children, Helen (1909-1983) and Joseph (1911-1986). Helen became a member of the Order of Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, where she took the name Sister Mary Michael. Joseph served in the Navy during World War II, and was the longtime manager of a meat market on SE 82nd Avenue in Portland, where he was wounded during a holdup in 1961.
Patrick Holland (1839-1919) was born in County Clare, Ireland, and immigrated to the United States in 1859. After military service during and after the Civil War, Holland came to Portland in 1867, where he worked in the dairy and real estate businesses.
Content Description
The collection consists primarily of property records, including records relating to property in Tillamook County in which Joseph McMahon invested, such as Camelot Estates. There are some records relating to McMahon's mother, Catherine, and receipts for family plots and gravestones at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The collection also includes title abstracts for a number of properties in Portland, Oregon; Oberlin, Oregon; and Marion County, Oregon; as well as records and correspondence relating to people outside of the McMahon family, particularly real estate dealer Patrick Holland.
