Historical Note
Brown & Cole was founded in 1909 by Linden Brown and George H. Cole, beginning with a single dry goods store in Lynden (Washington State). The business moved to Bellingham, Washington and was formally incorporated in 1912. Subsequent decades saw Brown & Cole - still a locally owned and operated enterprise - expand from one Bellingham grocery store and location to ownership of more than 30 stores across Washington as well as in Oregon and Montana.
Leadership of Brown & Cole was very much a family affair: Jack B. Cole (son of George H. and Claire Cole) took over as company president from his father in 1956, and Craig W. Cole (son of Jack B. and Ramona Cole) became president and chief executive officer in 1989. While "Brown & Cole" is the generic term used to refer to the company and its assets, Brown & Cole operated with and under such names, partnerships, license and affiliations as:
- Brown & Cole Stores
- Brown & Cole Stores, LLC

Series VII: Corporate Citizenship and Industry Leadership, 1979-2023
Contextual note from donor on Associated Grocers, Inc (AG): AG was a large regional cooperative grocery wholesale supplier to approximately 350 stores of varying sizes in Washington, Oregon, and Alaska. Its headquarters and large main warehouse were located at the south end of Boeing field in Seattle.
AG had about 150 "coop" shareholder/members who operated one or more stores, most of them large enough to be considered supermarkets. AG provided a variety of goods and services to the member stores and became in the 1980s and 1990s one of the largest (and at one point the largest) privately owned companies in Washington, with sales over $1 billion.
AG and Brown & Cole (a coop member since the 1940s) became strategic partners in growth, eventually forming a joint venture operating company in 2001. AG assisted Brown & Cole in acquiring other independent supermarket operations, thereby protecting and expanding its supply chain to those stores. As Brown & Cole acquired other AG member stores, it also acquired AG ownership shares, eventually becoming 25% of AG's business and ownership (and the largest customer of both categories). Brown & Cole itself grew into becoming one of the top dozen or so private companies in Washington. But the AG - Brown & Cole relationship became fraught with problems. (See "Statement of Events for Columbia Bank" of August 29, 2012 in the selected materials provided in this section for an explanation.)
