Biographical Note

Laxmi Ganesh Tewari is a practitioner of Gwalior gharana vocal music and ethnomusicology scholar. He was born on September 8, 1938 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India and studied at Banaras Hindu University under B.R. Deodhar and Dr. Lalmani Misra. After obtaining a Doctor of Music in 1967, he moved to the United States to pursue a PhD in ethnomusicology at Wesleyn University.

Dr. Tewari served as a faculty member of the Ethnomusicology Department at Sonoma State University in California from 1974-2014. He has done extensive fieldwork in India, Turkey, Trinidad and Tobago, Thailand, Fiji, Ghana and Zimbabwe, recording folk songs and festivals and authoring academic books, articles and documentaries. Among those titles are A Splendor of Worship: Women's Fasts, Rituals, Stories, and Art (1991), Folk Songs of Trinidad Indians(1994), and Folk Songs of Uttar Pradesh (2006). Tewari's articles have appeared in South Asia Research, South Asia Journal, and Asian Folklore Studies.

He has also made numerous recordings of his music; chief amongst them is his rendering of Sameshwari, a Raga created by Dr. Lalmani Misra to preserve the notes of Samagana of Sama Veda period.
