Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Jerome "Jerry" Richard was born in New York City in March 1931. In 1953, he received a bachelor's degree in Experimental Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. After earning a master's degree in Clinical Psychology from the New School for Social Research, he moved to San Francisco in the late 50s, acquiring a master's degree in English from San Francisco State University. Pursuing a career in writing and teaching, Jerry Richard taught English at the University of Montana, Goddard College, and Western Washington University. A noted author, journalist, and editor, Jerry's short stories and essays were published in magazines and journals all over the country. His interests included creative writing, film, and folk music and he maintained regular correspondence with friends and colleagues in these respective fields. In his later years, Jerry worked as a grievance officer, assisting members of the National Writers Union in disputes with publishers. Jerry Richard died in April 2019 in Seattle, Washington.

The Jerome Richard Correspondence contains several letters written to Richard between 1968 and 2011 with most letters dating from the 1970s and early-1980s. The correspondence offers personal documentation of several artists, writers, and musicians that maintained longstanding friendships with Richard. Several letters are from noted authors and poets, including original poems by Jane Shore and Sandra M. Gilbert. A substantial portion of the correspondence is from American author, photojournalist, and poet, William Childress, detailing his family life, teaching career, and writing ventures. Others are from acquaintances and former colleagues, and include commentary on popular media, academia, and the state of art and politics during the 70s and 80s. This collection also contains correspondence and a collection of photos from Evelyn Einstein, granddaughter of Albert Einstein, detailing aspects of her personal and professional life.
