Biographical Note

Burton Steinberg (1918-2001) was born and raised in Seattle and graduated from Garfield High School. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific and as Chief Master-at-Arms for the naval hospital in Seattle. He was active in the Jewish Congregation Bikur Cholim-Machzikay Hadath in Seattle. When the synagogue relocated from Capitol Hill to the Seward Park area in the 1970s, Burton Steinberg helped to establish the Capitol Hill Minyan, a branch of the synagogue at 1501 17th Ave., Seattle. He served as unpaid director of Capitol Hill Minyan, leading singing, providing food for services and celebrations, handling finances, and teaching. Along with his duties to the synagogue, he owned and operated three stores in Seattle: Burton Men's Shop (1111 First Ave., Seattle), Jackson Street Clothing and Barney's Jewelry and Loan.
