Biographical Note

Margaret Ann Patterson (Dyer) was born 14 August 1858 in the township of Darlington in Ontario, Canada. She immigrated to the United States in 1880. John W. Patterson was born in June 1855 in Michigan. The two were married in 1884 in British Columbia, where they subsequently worked as missionaries for the Methodist Church in Spillumachine. The Pattersons came to Washington State in 1889 to continue their missionary work in Nooksack. They also lived in Eastsound on Orcas Island, Washington where the Rev. Patterson may have served as the minister for a few years. They then moved to Seattle, Washington. Over the course of their marriage they had three children, none of whom survived. Margaret Patterson died in 1937.

Content Description

The Margaret Patterson and Rev. J.W. Patterson papers contain correspondence, one sermon, some poetry, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, tax receipts, certificates, and photographs. The bulk of the collection comprises correspondence with Margaret Patterson’s family and friends concerning family matters and some ministerial problems. The collection also contains photographs that are mostly unidentified and undated.
