Historical Note

In 1971 the Reclamation Division was created as part of the Montana Department of State Lands. Included in the division was the Coal and Uranium Bureau which was created to oversee the activities of commercial coal and uranium extraction companies. In 1996, via state government reorganization, the Bureau was changed to the Industrial and Energy Minerals Bureau when the Reclamation Division was transferred to the Department of Environmental Quality. With this change the Bureau expanded it's responsibilities to include petroleum companies and other energy related extraction industries.
