Chauncey Erasmus Woodworth Photographs, circa 1890-1908

This series contains three items: an essay by Woodworth entitled "Curiosities," about his collection of Native American artifacts; a 1904 letter written in Chippewa on the stationery of Robinson and Kirk, a dry goods firm in Billings, Montana; and an undated credit register from the J.E. Edwards Company, Indian Traders and Dealers in General Merchandise, Crow Agency, Montana.

This group of photographs was mostly produced by Woodworth; dates assigned are approximate based on clothing and contextual information. Most of the photographs appear to have been taken in western Montana, northern Idaho, and Yellowstone National Park, though many are unidentified. Subjects include tree planting, street scenes, and a circus in Missoula, Montana; many images of the smelter in Anaconda, Montana; a family group in Yellowstone National Park; a group at Lolo Hot Springs, Montana; Thompson Falls, Montana; Flathead Lake; and many camping and other outdoor scenes with men and women. Also included in this series is a group of colored lantern slides of fanciful and fairy-tale scenes, most of which were produced by Erker Brothers Optical Company of St. Louis.
