Biographical Note

Chauncey Erasmus Woodworth was born in Jamestown, New York, in 1856. He came to Montana as a surveyor for the Northern Pacific Railroad and settled in Missoula. He was a charter member of Missoula's Elks Club, was active in the Masons, and appears to have been an avid amateur photographer. He died February 26, 1941, and was buried in the Missoula Cemetery.

The collection is divided into two series:

Series I: Manuscripts, 1 folder, 1904

Series II: Photographs, 356 images, circa 1890-1908

Custodial History

The manuscript materials were received in 1937 from Chauncey Woodworth. Most of the photographs were a gift of John Forssen, 1974.

Processing Note

The actions of the original processors are unknown. In 2000, the manuscripts and photographic elements of the collection, formerly kept separate, were re-united and re-described.
