Historical Note

American Legion-sponsored Boys State camps were born of a desire to counter the Fascist inspired Young Pioneer camps of the 1930s, where boys of high school age were being taught that democracy had outworn its usefulness and should be replaced by a new form of government, namely Fascism. Boys State camp activities include classroom instruction on law, civil service, election procedures, etc.; election of a government with political officers and agencies, based on the structure of the state; and general assemblies for all attendees.

Content Description

This collection is made up primarily of the names of participants of Boys State during the years from 1939 to 1978. Names are recorded on 3x5 cards filed in file drawers and identified individually by the year attended and in a general alphabetical order of all the years held. Each card contains the name of the participant, home address, and the year of attendance at Boys State. The yearly attendance file has the names from 1949 on while the alphabetical name listing has all the names since the beginning in 1939.

Folders containing the general officers elected also have the yearly membership of that session. The staff and councilors have a separate set of folders with the names and addresses of the men along with the name of the "city" they were assigned to. There are two schedules of a yearly session of Boys State along with four of the souvenir books that the conference produced.
