Historical Note
John Howard Powell was born on April 20, 1866 to Reverend Curtis Scoles Powell and Margaret Welch Powell. After graduating from the University of Michigan in 1889 he taught Greek and Latin in Decatur, Illinois. He followed his sister Marth to Seattle and joined his brother-in-law's firm, Strattano, Lewis, and Gilman. In 1892 he brought his fiancee Elizabeth Gastman to Spokane and then Seattle, where they married. In 1897 Powell was elected to the Washington State legislature from the Third Ward, and in 1902 was appointed as a regent to the University of Washington by Governor Henry McBride for a six-year term.
