Historical Note

Maude I. Kerns was born in 1876 in Portland, Oregon. She graduated from the University of Oregon in 1899 with a Bachelor of Arts. She continued to move to New York and go to Teaching college at Columbia University. She spent time traveling though Asia and Europe and returned to teach at the University of Oregon and was head of the art education program. Much of her work was damaged or burned due to a fire in the art building. When she died in 1965, the Eugene Art Center was renamed to The Maude Kerns Art Center in her honor. This art center holds much of her paintings, ceremics, and other mixes arts.
