Historical Note
The Zion's Cooperative Mercantile Institution (ZCMI) was originally organized on 15 October 1868 by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The store opened in 1876 and grew rapidly. Pioneer architects, William Flosom and Obed Taylor, designed the original facade, which was the largest iron facade built in Utah at the time. This original cast iron facade was dismantled, restored, and incorporated into the new ZCMI store at the ZCMI Mall in the early 1970s.

The Z.C.M.I. Main Street store facade report (1971) was compiled by Cannon, Mullen, & Wright for the Zion's Securities Corp. on the proposed facade renovation to this popular Salt Lake City store. The report includes information on original materials used in the facade, news articles, historical data, a booklet, blueprint copies, and letters, among other things.
