Biographical Note

James L. Lords was born in Salt Lake City in 1928. He received his B.S. and M.S. in vertebrate zoology at the University of Utah in 1950 and 1951. Afterwards, he served in the Chemical Corps of the U.S. Army. In 1960, he earned his Ph.D in Botany at the University of Utah. After a two year stint as a Post-doctoral Fellow at the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Lords returned to the University of Utah as an Assistant Professor of Experimental Biology in 1962. His areas of specialty were in thermophilic organisms and the effects of electromagnetic radiation, especially microwaves, on biological systems from the subcellular to the organismal level. He later held dual professorships in the Department of Biology and in the Department of Electrical Engineering. Dr. James L. Lords retired in 1998 and earned Emeritus status that same year.

Content Description

This collection contains course descriptions, correspondence, memoranda, reports, reprints, research proposals, and a copy of Dr. Lord's vita. Approximately half of the collection consists of correspondence, both private and professional, with two folders covering his days as a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Utah and as a Post-doctoral Fellow at the University of Wisconsin. Approximately .25 linear foot of the collections consists of proposals, reports, and reprints for research projects, in which he collaborated with other researchers, mostly dealing with the effects of microwaves on biological systems. One folder relates to his service on the Honors Program Advisory Committee.
