Content Description

Collection consists of several documents about a windstorm that struck the Pacific Northwest in October 1962. These include a November 23, 1962, report by Gilbert L. Sternes, the United States Weather Bureau state climatologist in Portland, Oregon, titled "Summary of the 1962 Columbus Day Storm." It includes weather maps, information on the storm's development, and data on wind speeds, pressure, precipitation, fatalities, and economic effects. Also included is a paper, titled "Detailed Surface Analysis of the October 12, 1962 (Columbus Day) Storm in Oregon and Washington," by Robert E. Lynott of the U.S. Forest Service, that was presented at a conference in 1964; and a May 15, 1964, copy of the official Weather Bureau record related to the storm, consisting of a summary and weather forecasts, advisories, and warnings.
