Historical Note

The first drama acts at the University of Wyoming started in 1894 by the Lowell and Olympic societies. Later, the English department took over theatrical productions. After the play, "A Doll's House," in 1930, the University of Wyoming's Theater Program proliferated. By 1945, the program usually staged ten or more plays each academic year and six plays over the summers. Under the leadership of Richard R. Dunham starting in 1947, theatre productions transitioned from the Department of English into a department of arts, drama, and music. Between 1894 and 1988 the theatre department gave their interpretation on popular plays ranging from Shakespeare to Sartre, and Wilde to Kaufman. Through the use of dazzling sets, elegant costumes, and recruited actors from around the country, the theatre department immersed itself into the cannon of university theatre programs.
