Historical Note

Michael F. Kohl was an archivist, librarian, and historian with a background in history and business administration. He earned his graduate degrees from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and worked in archival and library roles in Wisconsin, Rhode Island, and California before becoming the Head of Special Collections at Clemson University Libraries in 1982. In the early 1990s, he developed an interest in paleontology through volunteer work on several digs, leading him to research and co-edit historical field journals from early fossil expeditions. His editorial work included Discovering Dinosaurs in the Old West: The Field Journals of Arthur Lakes and A Triceratops Hunt in Pioneer Wyoming. He also presented topics related to archives, records management, and the history of paleontology at professional conferences, including meetings of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology and Dino Fest.
