Historical Note

The Cosmos Club organized in Missoula, Montana, on April 17, 1896, and is still active. The founder of the club was Oscar J. Craig, the first president of the University of Montana. An organization for men and women, the goal of this club, according to its constitution, is "the extension and refinement of all our sympathies." To achieve this goal, Cosmos Club members present papers and topics of conversation on a wide array of topics. Examples of topics covered by the club were: book reviews, explaining the atom bomb, "Meeting Life and Surviving," spinning, the making of Montana, Arabia, art and democracy, religion and science, and the Pacific rim.
