Historical Note
Eldridge Reeves Johnson was founder and president of the Victor Talking Machine Company. In 1898 he became intrigued by talking machines and set up a small machine shop in Camden, New Jersey. The Victor Talking Machine Company was incorporated in 1901. Johnson retired in 1927. Two years later, the Victor company merged with Radio Corporation of America. In 1930 the name was changed to RCA-Victor Company.
After retiring Johnson participated in and helped to finance scientific expeditions to Easter Island and Central America. Johnson engaged in many philanthropic projects. He was also the greatest contributor to the Republican National Committee for the re-election of Herbert Hoover.
