Historical Note

Edwin D. Coram enlisted in the United States Army August 13, 1883, assigned to 6th Cavalry, Troop K. He was discharged August 12, 1888 by expiration of service at Fort Wingate, New Mexico. Coram reenlisted August 13, 1888 at Fort Wingate, New Mexico for Battery 13, 1st Artillery at Alcatraz Island, California. On August 17, 1888 he joined his unit and desereted the following day.

The Edwin D. Coram correspondence (1883-1885) consist of original letters written by Coram during his military service at Fort Wingate, New Mexico. The letters are addressed to his family and discuss his experiences with the weather, the environment, activities at the Fort, along with descriptions of the Hopi and Navajo towns.

One letter in the collection is written by Thomas Y. Yeates and discusses Coram desertion from the military.
