Biographical Note

Winslow Whitney Smith and his wife, Alice Colton Smith, were professors at Utah State University. Winslow was born on May 14, 1907, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Alice was born on January 10, 1913, in Vernal, Utah, but spent part of her childhood in Washington, D.C., because her father, Don Byron Colton, served in the United States Congress. Winslow attended the University of Utah and went on to receive his doctorate at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Alice attended Columbia University but transferred to the University of Utah, where she met and married Winslow. After teaching at the University of Southern California, Winslow transferred to the Utah State Agricultural College, now Utah State University, and headed the bacteriology department. While a USU faculty member, Winslow frequently traveled and in the 1950s worked on agricultural projects for the government of Israel. Alice, who obtained her master's degree in sociology at USU, accompanied her husband to Israel and worked on cultural projects. Alice also taught sociology at USU. Alice served on many boards and committees, especially with those that dealt with issues concerning women and minorities.
