Historical Note
The Cottrell and Helean Logging Company operated out of Missoula, Montana, following World War II until the early 1970s when they discontinued operations. It was an independent logging company that timber to the Anaconda Company in Bonner, Montana.

The collection is divided into four series:

Custodial History
These materials were collected and housed by Connie Piquette for an unknown number of years prior to donation to the K. Ross Toole Archives.

Processing Note
The actions of the original processor are unknown. In 1998 the collection was divided into four series, maps were re-housed for preservation, bound volumes were reintegrated into the collection, and materials were extensively re-described.

Series I: General Correspondence, 1945-1958
1 folderThe series consists of reminder letters concerning unpaid bills from other companies, workman's compensation claims, copies of outgoing correspondence and information on timber products.

Series II: Financial Records, 1945-1959
6.0 linear feetThe series contains check registers, payroll information, assets and liabilities balance sheets, tax returns, and time sheets from Cottrell and Helean Logging Company. Log hauling reports, which contain the car number, number of logs hauled, number of board feet, and totals is in the series. Also in the series is wage schedules that specifies all grades of a certain logging job and the wage scale for that position. A general ledger containing assets and liabilities of the company and two payroll registers, including a saw scale, are in the series.
Materials are arranged alphabetically.
The time sheets are closed to research use due to privacy laws that protect social security numbers.
