Historical Note

Edward Lyman Munson, Jr. (1904-1967) was a Brigadier-General in the United States Army known for his leadership roles in military information and education services during World War II. He organized and operated the Army Research Branch of the War Department, the Army Information Division, and served as chief of the Army Pictorial Service. Born in New Mexico, Munson was the son of Brigadier-General Edward Munson and Mrs. Munson. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1926 with a bachelor’s degree in science and began his military career as a second lieutenant. Over the next two decades, Munson rose through the ranks, becoming a Brigadier-General in 1945. Munson was stationed all over the United States during his service, from California and Hawaii to Georgia and West Point Academy. His notable contributions included the establishment of the Yank Army Weekly, the Armed Forces Radio Service, and the Army Pictorial Service. During his military service, he also published the book Leadership for the American Soldier. Munson served in several overseas theaters during World War II, including Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Pacific. After his military career, he transitioned to the motion picture and television industries, serving as director of NBC Film Division and director of Television Operations at NBC Television Network.

Content Description

This collection contains the papers of Edward Lyman Munson, Jr. which include records from his time in service to the military and his time working at NBC Television Network. The collection includes World War I and World War II propaganda posters, reports, photographs, books, correspondence, and art. Also included are articles written by Munson, biographical information on Munson Jr. and Sr. and the family. The collection also has phonograph records and 16mm film from his work with the War Department's Pictorial Unit.
