Historical NoteReturn to Top

Solitude Mountain Resort is located in Big Cottonwood Canyon of the Wasatch Mountains outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. It is adjacent to the Brighton Ski Resort and Alta Ski Resort. Solitude was developed in 1956 by Robert M. Barrett, a businessman who worked in the uranium industry in Moab, Utah. It opened in 1957. In 1977, it was acquired by Gary DeSeelhorst's business group; DeSeelhorst became the sole owner of Solitude Mountain Resort in 1986, when he began renovating and modernizing the resort. The DeSeelhorst family sold Solitude in 2014 to Deer Valley Resort; Deer Valley was acquired by Alterra Mountain Company in 2017. Solitude Mountain Resort has hosted snowboardcross and ski cross events. It operates the Solitude Nordic Center, located between Solitude and Brighton, which offers Nordic winter sports like snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
