(News-Miner Photo by Phil's Studio) GLAMOROUS FARM HAND - This attractive housewife smiles cheerily as she helps with the potato harvest at Bert Stimple's Green Valley farm. She and her husband have been netting about $40 a day in the fields as the bumper crop is taken in. With Stimple, as with most farmers in this area, it's pretty much a one-man show until harvest. Then workers are called in from the ranks of military personnel and [housewives] who can put in a week or so assisting the valley's [agriculturalists] bring in their year's produce.         Plaque reads: "Old two spot" 42-ton shay, this locomotive, sometimes called "the deuce," has hauled many millions of feet of logs from the forests to Port Alberni mills. She entered service in the Alberni Valley as a new machine in 1914 and served faithfully until 1953 when she was replaced by truck hauling. Standing here on rails manufactured in 1871, this railway engine is a monument to the pioneering enterprise that opened the Alberni Region to industry and settlement. Donated to the City of Port Alberni by MacMillan & Bloedel Limited, May, 1954.

        Written on verso: Fir Plywood History - Neg. #1005-1, BIRTHPLACE OF AN INDUSTRY. Here is the place where fir plywood was born. Photo shows old Portland Manufacturing Co. in Oregon. This firm "glued-up" a few panels of fir plywood in 1905 for display at the Lewis & Clark Exposition of that year. Within a short time door plants began making plywood for doors, the forerunner of an industry now encompassing about 100 plants with an annual production of about 4 billion feet of plywood annually.
