Then workers are called in from the ranks of military personnel and [housewives] who can put in a week or so assisting the valley's [agriculturalists] bring in their year's produce. Plaque reads: "Old two spot" 42-ton shay, this locomotive, sometimes called "the deuce," has hauled many millions of feet of logs from the forests to Port Alberni mills. She entered service in the Alberni Valley as a new machine in 1914 and served faithfully until 1953 when she was replaced by truck hauling. Standing here on rails manufactured in 1871, this railway engine is a monument to the pioneering enterprise that opened the Alberni Region to industry and settlement. Donated to the City of Port Alberni by MacMillan & Bloedel Limited, May, 1954.
