Historical Note

Washington State University’s first student-published newspaper, the College Record, was printed monthly during the 1892-1893 school year. The Evergreen began publication in spring of 1895 and remains in publication. It became known as the Daily Evergreen in 1979. The Chinook is the WSU yearbook, which was first published in 1899. It was produced by the Junior Class until 1926, when the Associated Students of the State College of Washington took control of publishing the yearbook. Since 1974 it has been the responsibility of Student Publishing / Student Media.

Content Description

This collection consists of approximately 55,000 Washington State University images from the Chinook yearbook and the Daily Evergreen student newspaper. Most of the materials are negative strips, with a comparatively small quantity of slides and photographic prints, as well as four CDs and one 3.5” floppy disk. The various images, some of which are identified and described, include (but are not limited to) events, performances, sports, portraits, clubs, and buildings. The images date from 1921 to 2007, although the majority of the materials fall between 1986 and 2002.

The majority of the materials consist of sheets of negative strips, with contents hand-labeled by the student workers who original created or worked with them. In general, the listed subjects are taken verbatim from the original labelling.

A second section consists of black and white photographic prints between 1986 and 1990.

The third and final section consists of black and white photographs published in the 1989 Chinook (yearbook).

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The negatives came to MASC in several overlapping chronological series of folders of images. These series were interfiled and foldered to create one main chronological series of images. Where specific subject-based folders existed, these were retained, filed first chronologically and then by subject.

The second section is organized alphabetically by subject.

The third section is organized by page number as recorded on the image.

Acquisition Information

This collection of student publications photographs from both the Evergreen and the Chinook was received from Tracy Milano of the Washington State University Office of Student Media on May 24, 2019, and retained as UPC 2019-02.

Processing Note

This collection was processed by Kaitlyn Van Vleet in September of 2019.

Related Materials

WSU MASC holds a number of series of photographs which document the campus and its students, taken either by Student Media and its predecessor, or by WSU’s Photo Services and its predecessors. Rather than listing them all here, we’d suggest looking at the list of the MASC’s photograph collections, as well as at the unprocessed collections (accessions).

The MASC has a digital Evergreens collection, as well as a digital Chinooks collection. Each collection is complete, excepting a few Evergreen issues where no known copy still exists, from the first issue up to the point at which the individual collections stop.
