Content Description

The David F. DeLap Papers mainly concern his 1923 ascent of the Grand Teton with fellow mountaineers Quin Blackburn and Andy DePirro. Material related to this climb includes correspondence, photographs, published accounts, personal recollections, and audiotapes containing his oral history account. The collection also contains correspondence and photographs from William Owen who climbed the Grand Teton in 1898. There is general information about the history of climbing in the Tetons including correspondence with Orrin and Lorraine Bonney and Leigh Ortenburger. There is a small amount of information about another climb DeLap made in 1923 in Montana in the Mission Mountains, and there is material related to Jackson Hole pioneer James H. Mangus. Material related to Quin Blackburn not only relates to the Grand Teton but also concerns Admiral Byrd’s second Antarctic expedition from 1933-1935. Blackburn was a geologist on this expedition.
