- The William Spencer papers (1960-2000) contains a scrapbook, newsletter, and clippings documenting William Spencer's career as a University of Utah and United States ski racer and an Olympic biathlete. The materials also document the development of biathlon as an Olympic sport. Included is a photocopy of the book Biathlon by Arthur Stegen. Spencer is a biathlete, skier, and cyclist. In February 2000 he was inducted into the Biathlon Hall of Fame.

Content Description
The William Spencer papers (1960-2000) document both Mr. Spencer's own pursuits as a top University of Utah and United States skier and Olympic biathlete, and the development of biathlon as a sport in the US and in the Olympics. Included in the collection is a personal scrapbook of news clippings and memorabilia documenting Mr. Spencer's activities as a biathlete, skier and cyclist; a copy of a newsletter produced by the 76th Army Division with a feature article on biathlon and Mr. Spencer; and a copy of former Olympic Team Coach Arthur Stegen's book, Biathlon. The scrapbook also contains many references to other well-known skiers and athletes, and profiles several competitions in biathlon, Nordic skiing, Alpine skiing, ski jumping, and cycling. Two additional news clippings regarding Alta ski area's 50th year celebration, and Mr. Spencer's induction into the Biathlon Hall of Fame are included with the collection.

This personal scrapbook contains many news clippings and memorabilia associated with Mr. Spencer's extensive biathlon and skiing history. Many of the competition announcements and results feature other familiar accomplished skiers, and there are many references to his Olympic pursuits as well. Additional clippings document bicycle races, and several personal keepsakes (cards, telegrams, plane tickets, etc.) are included among the clippings.

"Utah's Spencer inducted into Hall of Fame," The Salt Lake Tribune, 22 February 2000. An article written by Brian Maffly which features Mr. Spencer's Biathlon Hall of Fame induction and includes mention of other inductees.
