Historical Note

Eugene Giles was born on 24 November 1901 in Monroe, Tennessee. His family moved to Whitman county, Washington around 1904-1905. In 1922, he graduated from Eastern College of Education in Cheney, Washington. Giles earned an MA from the State College of Washington in Pullman. During World War II, he was in Tacoma, Washington and in 1947 received his PhD in Education from the University of Washington. He joined the faculty of the University of Idaho as a professor of psychology in 1948. Giles was a Fulbright scholar during the 1956-1957 during which time he traveled and taught in India at the Government Training College in Jullundur, India. He was president of the Idaho Psychological Association in 1962. Giles was granted emeritus status upon his retirement in 1966. Giles died 17 November 1984 in Spokane, Washington.
