Biographical Note
Clarence Leroy Andrews moved to Seattle in 1890, where he spent the next 7 years as a deputy in the King County auditor's office and also owned a small printing business. He left for Alaska in 1897 to join the Duke of Abruzzi's expedition to scale Mount Saint Elias on the Alaska-Canada border. It was on this trip that he learned the rudiments of photography. Although he planned to return to Seattle, he stopped briefly in Sitka and remained there for a year working for the Customs office. For more than a decade, beginning in 1898, he continued his work in Sitka, Skagway and Eagle before returning once again to Seattle. He made repeated trips to Alaska in the following years serving as newsman and photographer for the Juneau newspaper Empire and also as a surveyor for the School and Reindeer Service for the Alaska Bureau of Education. The later years of Andrew's life were devoted to writing about Alaska and the Eskimo and he contributed many articles on aspects of Alaskan life and culture to magazines and newspapers. He died in Oregon in 1948.
