Biographical Note

A life-long Utahan, Delmar C. Tingey was born in Brigham City, Box Elder County in 1897. Following high school he attended the Utah Agricultural College (USU), graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1922 and earning his master’s degree in 1924. He later joined the faculty as a teacher and researcher, spending 43 years at his alma mater. He specialized in the study of weeds and in developing hybrid varieties of wheat to combat the effects of Bunt disease. In 1942 when the outbreak of WW II threatened the nation’s supply of rubber, he accepted a federal appointment to try and develop rubber from the Guayule plant in southern California. Returning to USU after the war, Tingey affiliated with the Crops Research Laboratory, a federal/state cooperative research unit stationed at USU. Tingey received the institution’s Distinguished Service Award in 1982. He passed away June 3, 1989.

Content Description

This collection consists of reports and data related to Tingey’s research on weeds and plant diseases. Several dozen files contain reports and research on his Guayule research during the war, and on his investigative work concerning Dwarf Bunt wheat smut.
