Biographical Note
Horace Sylvester Snyder (1912-2010) was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he received his high school and undergraduate education. He attended the University of Louisville Medical School for a short time, but returned back to Utah to support his family at the height of the Great Depression. He married Chelta Moss in 1938, and their marriage lasted 62 years until her death. At a young age, Snyder acquired a camera and soon became an accomplished photographer, and used the skill to support his family as a portrait photographer with multiple studio locations. Much of his photography is marked by his passion for rodeos and the idea of the American cowboy. After World War II, in which he served, Snyder became an irrigation engineer and started his own company, Snyder Distributing Company. He died in 2010.
Horace S. Snyder's father, Horace Greeley Snyder (1873-1951) was born in Wanship, Utah. He was the twenty-ninth of thirty-five children of his father, George Gideon Snyder, and the ninth of eleven children born to his mother, Caroline Kilfoyle, the fourth polygamous wife of George Gideon. George had six wives and had migrated from Canada to Nauvoo, Illinois, before joining the Latter Day Saint pioneers in Utah. Horace was a mine inspector, prospector, and developed a large amount of land into mines and mining communities. He died in 1951.
