Biographical Note

William Woodridge Wickes (W.W.) was born in Ohio in 1872 and married Helen Stinson in 1896. Their son, Thomas A. Wickes, was born December 29, 1902 in Boulder, Montana. Thomas Wickes graduated from Missoula County High School and attended the University of Montana. On July 27, 1925 he married Heloise Vinal. He and his father (W.W. Wickes) owned and operated Star Garage at 149 West Front Street from 1920 to 1968. William died in March, 1960. Thomas A. Wickes died August 6, 1983 in Missoula, Montana.

Content Description

This collection consists of a photographs, negatives and a photograph album featuring images of automobile accidents in and around Missoula, Montana. Various tow trucks and equipment are shown in these photographs as is west Front Street businesses located near Star Garage. Many photographs have a description as well as a hand-written statement by Thomas A. Wickes. Also included are photographs not related to the garage showing the dam and Flathead River gorge near Polson, Montana, a group photograph showing several prominent Missoula businessmen, fires at the Florence and Hammond Buildings, and a photograph of Alex Tillinghast, the first administrator at the Montana Deaf and Blind School.
