Historical Note

1889-1950

In 1889, the Utah Agricultural College, now known as Utah State University (USU), established the first business degree west of the Mississippi River. In 1906, Utah Agriculture College (UAC) divided its curriculum into five schools, including the School of Commerce, a predecessor to the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business. Around 1918, the name was changed to the School of Commerce and Business Administration.

1957-2006

In 1957, Utah State Agricultural College became USU, and the School of Commerce and Business Administration became the College of Business and Social Sciences. During this time, the George S. Eccles Business building was built and dedicated, and USU established the second oldest Undergraduate Research Program in the nation.

2007-2025

Following a donation for the Huntsman Foundation, the College of Business became the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business starting in 2007. The Huntsman Hall, a major building project that connected the existing Eccles Business building and the new addition, was completed in 2016.

For more information about the history of the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business see Huntsman History.

Content Description

The Utah State University Historic College of Business records include magazines, reports, promotional material, and other assorted department files created by professors, staff, and students. This collection only includes materials created up to 2007, when the college was renamed the Jon M Huntsman School of Business.

This collection also includes materials created by the historic College of Business from about 1957 to 1969 under the name College of Business and Social Sciences. These materials were separated into a series to help distinguish between materials created by the College of Business and the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (CHASS or HASS). Although there may have been some overlap between the two between 1957 and 1960, the College of Business and Social Sciences is a direct predecessor to the College of Business.

Acquisitions for the Jon M Huntsman School of Business will be collected under UUS_14.13/1
