Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The Albert C. Allen Collection was purchased from Bill Lee in 1991. He had previously purchased the collection from a dealer in San Francisco.

The photographs have been arranged as they were in the scrapbook to maintain their original order. Descriptions of photos in quotes have been taken verbatim from the photo-album and may have errors in spelling.

Lt. Allen (later Major) was stationed at Fort Douglas for most of his career. He also served at the Presidio of San Francisco and in the Philippines. The collection contained a scrapbook containing news clippings about Ft. Douglas and Lt. Allen's company in Utah, and at the Presidio of San Francisco, with references to the Spanish-American War, 1898, the Ute campaigns, 1879, the "Tin War," 1888, and the insurrection in the Philippines, 1899-1901. The scrapbook contained typed stories and songs, telegrams, order, and a pair of children's knit mittens. It covers a time period from roughly 1895-1905. Also in the collection was a photo-album from which the photos were taken, covering the years 1869-1905.
