Historical Note
Ernest M. Richardson (d. 1960) was an investment banker and, after retirement, became a historian. He authored a book, The Battle of Lightning Creek: An Account of the Last Blood-Spilling Conflict Between Indians and Whites in Wyoming, published in 1956.
Content Description
The collection concerns Wyoming history and contains Richardson’s unpublished articles as well as research materials consisting of newspaper articles, photographs, correspondence, booklets, and books. There is also correspondence with institutions from which Richardson sought historical data and with whom he corresponded regarding publication of his articles. The materials are arranged alphabetically in file folders. Historical subjects include Clara Jerome and the Jerome family; General Henry Carrington and other frontier generals, the Cheyenne Club, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad (including Dick J. Nelson, a CBQ conductor and assistant superintendent), finance on the western frontier, Fort Phil Kearny, Fort C.F. Smith, the Hayfield Fight, Johnson County War (including notes on Fred G.S. Hesse), Nelson Story, Jr., the Plains Indians, John “Portugee” Phillips, Thomas Twiss, and Northern Wyoming.
