Historical Note

Asa S. Mercer is best known as the author of The Banditti of the Plains and its recollection of the Johnson County War. He was also involved in the founding of the University of Washington. Mercer became a publisher of the Northwestern Livestock Journal in Cheyenne, Wyoming and, later, settled in Hyattville, Wyoming as a rancher.

Mercer, a clipping titled “A Tribute to a Pioneer” concerning the life of Col. A. S. Mercer, a copy of Asa Mercer’s marriage certificate, and a postcard from A. S. Mercer to Mrs. Mercer dated 1883.
