Historical Note

Frank Trelease was born on November 3, 1913 in Buffalo, New York and was raised in Colorado where he graduated from Colorado Springs High School in 1932. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado in 1937 followed by his LL.B in 1938. He later earned a J.S.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1962. Prior to embarking on his thirty-five year career at the University of Wyoming, Trelease worked in private practice in Denver, Colorado and taught law at the University of Colorado for four years. He joined the faculty of the University of Wyoming College of Law in 1942. He served as the Dean of the College of Law from 1960 to 1971. Under his leadership, clinical programs were added to the curriculum and the Land and Water Review was founded. He retired in 1977 and went on to serve as a visiting professor at the University of Pacific and the University of Washington. Before his retirement, Trelease received the George Duke Humphrey Distinguished Faculty Award, an Honorary Doctor of Law degree, and the title Dean Emeritus in 1977.
