Historical Note

The University of Washington School of Drama was founded in 1942 by Professor Glenn Hughes. Prior to that time it had been a division of the English Department. The School of Drama offers courses in acting, directing, design, theory, and criticism. The program includes an undergraduate major, a Masters of Fine Arts (MFA), and a Ph.D. The MFA program has several areas of study, including the Professional Actor Training Program, which is a three-year intensive course of study that prepares students for a career in professional theater. There are also programs in scenic, costume, and lighting design and in directing. The Ph.D. program emphasizes theater history and drama criticism.
