Charles Dickens Magee Spokane Mountaineering Photograph Albums, 1898-1942 (bulk: 1923-1932)

The collection contains six photograph albums of mountaineering trips taken in the Inland Northwest, dating from 1898-1942 (bulk: 1923-1932). Each album section starts with a part of topographic map showing the area covered in the mountaineering trip. The photographs are then identified on each page as to what they contain. The albums are not precisely chronological, but are arranged by trips to particular areas. Magee identified almost all the photographs and the main captions have been transcribed. Names have been transcribed when the full name is given. The areas covered are Eastern Washington, Northwestern Idaho, and a small amount of Montana and British Columbia.

The photographs are generally of natural areas, but in documenting his trips, Magee also photographed small towns, abandoned mines and lumber camps, railroad stations, and ranger stations. There are group photographs of hiking clubs, and some identified portraits, but the people in the photographs are often just a part of the larger image. Most of the photos date from 1923-1932.
