Historical Note
Anson Mills (1834-1924) was an army officer during the Civil War. After laying out the town site of El Paso, Texas, in 1859, Anson Mills was commissioned as a lieutenant in the 18th U.S. Infantry at the outbreak of the Civil War. He served primarily in the West and moved up the ranks until he retired as a brigadier general in 1897. Mills served in military posts throughout the Rocky Mountain West, from Arizona to Wyoming, and was a member of the 1893 Mexican Boundary Commission. Mills led the attack on the Native American village at Slim Buttes in 1876.
