Biographical Note

Dr. Madison Macht completed his medical degree at the OHSU School of Medicine and, after completing his residency at OHSU, moved to Colorado where he then completed his fellowship at the University of Colorado, Denver in pulmonary and critical care. He holds board certifications in Internal Medicine, Critical Care, Pulmonary, and Neuro-Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Macht is a practicing pulmonologist in Aurora, Colorado (as of this writing in 2018). As this collection highlights, he is passionate about medical history. It appears that Macht collected much of this research information with uncertainty as to what it would produce. One note in the collection reflects back after a meeting— "question about how I will publish this ... a book, or a journal article?" This collection is the byproduct of Macht's research on figures he found of profound importance in the history of medicine, particular to Oregon Health and Science University.

The two primary figures in the collection, though many others are referenced, are Howard P. Lewis and J. Eglebert Dunphy. Dr. Howard, or "Hod," P. Lewis (1902-1985) began his legacy as a teacher while he was still a student. Lewis graduated with his medical degree from University of Oregon Medical School (UOMS) in 1930, and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at UOMS. After serving four years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, Dr. Lewis returned to UOMS and again was an important member of the faculty team. Becoming the school's very first full-time Department of Medicine chairman in 1947, Dr. Lewis was a key figure in the expansion of the department in a formative period of its history.

J. Englebert Dunphy was another first in the school's history. As a recruit from the Harvard Medical School, he was the first chairman at the UOMS Department of Surgery to have been a faculty member at a medical institution outside of Oregon. Dr. Dunphy is one of the most accomplished leaders in contemporary American surgery, having held what are considered to be five of the most prominent positions in the field: President of the American College of Surgeons, Chairman of the American Board of Surgery, President of the American Surgical Association, President of the Society of University Surgeons, and Chairman of the Board of Regents of the American College of Surgeons.

Content Description

The Madison Macht collection contains mixed records and materials used in Dr. Macht's personal and professional research on physicians Howard P. Lewis and J. Englebert Dunphy. The collection, which dates from 1922 to 2009, with a bulk of undated photocopied documents, consists of military and legal documents, medical reports, oral history research, Dr. Macht's notes on his subjects, letters and email correspondence, photographs, digital files (digital accession: 2009-010_2018.11.08), and an Oregon Agricultural College The Beaver yearbook. The collection displays Macht's research interests and methods, and possess key information on the life and impact of notable practitioners in OHSU's history and foundations.

This collection provides a helpful insight into the history of medicine in Oregon and beyond, and yields interesting research content from a dual prospective. The collection not only contains manuscripts that will give the researcher a direct link to the main actors of medical and surgical history in the mid- to late-twentieth century, it also reveals the keen interest and passion of a physician exploring the history of the field and paying homage to their predecessors — as well as their process and methodology in achieving this. For further reference, see also Dr. Macht's presentation on Dr. Howard P. Lewis, which produced many of the documents in the collection, and can be found in the OHSU Archives, as well as his 2009 biographical article "Large and Noble Lines" published in the summer issue of The Pharos.

The "Howard P. Lewis" series, which dates from 1922 to 2009, the bulk undated, includes information on Macht's research that was conducted for his presentation on Lewis. Macht made extensive use of OHSU's library and archives, especially the OHSU Oral History Projects, record of which is displayed in this series. Macht also conducted oral histories of his own, this series contains the interview agreements and notes. A large portion of the series consists of manuscripts and correspondence of Howard P. Lewis, including military files, grand round manuscript's, and letters. Also included in this series are newspaper articles, as well as a file on Lewis's son, Richard P. Lewis.

The "J. Englebert Dunphy" series is of a smaller size but will be of equal interest. The series dates from 2005 to 2007. This contains no manuscripts but does display just as clearly Macht's research. Included are Macht's notes, oral history interview information and photographs, email correspondences, and a collections copy order from the library at U.C.S.F. School of Medicine which houses a collection on Dunphy that Macht used in his research.
