Historical Note

William “Bill” A. Laycock was born on March 17, 1930, in Fort Collins, Colorado. He was raised in Wyoming on a ranch northeast of Cheyenne and in Laramie near the Sybille Canyon area. Laycock attended Laramie High School and in 1952 he received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in range management from the University of Wyoming. After graduating from the University of Wyoming, Laycock joined the U.S. Army, serving as a Lieutenant in the Korean War. While attending UW he met Charlotte Pulscher and they were married in 1955, shortly after his discharge from the Army. They moved to New Jersey after the wedding, where Laycock received his PhD in Range Management from Rutgers University. Laycock returned West, working for the USDA and the U.S. Forest Service before becoming the head of the Range Management Department at the University of Wyoming. It was during this time that Laycock also started a rangeland consultation business in the Rockies and Argentina, as well as the University of Nairobi, Africa. An avid rodeo fan, he advised several college rodeo programs and attended the National Finals Rodeo for over 30 years. William Laycock passed away in 2021.
