Historical Note

Gerald Folsom was born in Royalton, Vermont, on 5 October 1921. After graduating from high school he went to work managing a grocery store. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp in July 1942, as soon that organization dropped the college requirement for their Aviation Cadet program. He received his training in 1943 and was assigned as pilot of a B-24 Liberator the following year. Folsom flew 35 missions over Germany and France and was awarded the Air Medal with Three Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. After his discharge in 1945, Folsom attended the University of Utah, graduating with a degree in accounting and business management in 1949. He married and had three children. After his retirement, Folsom organized the Utah Chapter of the Eighth Air Force Historical Society, and was Secretary-Treasurer until November 2001. He currently lives in Salt Lake City, Utah.
