Historical Note

As of 2005, the University of Montana’s College of Arts and Sciences includes 22 divisions and departments and offers 15 specialized and pre-professional programs. In 1900, the College of Fine Arts offered courses in 13 areas and by 1950 this expanded to 23 areas. Many of the University of Montana’s Academic Schools and Colleges originated in the College of Arts and Sciences before becoming independent schools or colleges. These include the College of Forestry and Conservation, College of Health Professional and Biomedical Sciences, the School of Journalism, the School of Education, the School of Business Administration and the School of Fine Arts.

This collection contains records from the College of Arts and Sciences including departmental and divisional records, administrators’ and committees’ records, budgets, reports, correspondence, and personnel files. Series I, General Records, contains departmental and divisional records, administrators’ records, committees’ records, budgets, reports and correspondence. This series is in chronological, alphabetical order. Series II, Personnel Records, contains personnel files pertaining to the College of Arts and Sciences. Series II is restricted.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

These records are divided into two series:

Series I: General Files, 43.6 linear ft., 1941-1991

Series II: Student and Personnel Records, 7.4 linear ft. 1952-1970 - RESTRICTED

Acquisition Information

This record group was transferred to the K. Ross Toole Archives by the College of Arts and Sciences in three parts accessioned in 1977, 1991, and 2001.

Future Additions

Additions to the collection are expected.

Processing Note

The processor maintained the original chronological order of the materials with the exception of student and personnel files, which were physically moved into a separate, restricted series.
