Biographical Note
Bion Freeman Kendall (1827-1863) was born in Bethel, Maine and studied law at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. Kendall moved to Olympia, Washington and was appointed Superintendent of Indian Affairs for Washington Territory. He served in that position from 1861 to 1862.

Content Description
The Bion Freeman Kendall Papers include correspondence, certificates, and financial documents that document the life of Kendall and his experiences as the Superintendent of Indian Affairs for Washington Territory. Correspondents include Alexander Smith Abernethy, Anson G. Henry, James Willis Nesmith, Victor Smith, Henry H. Spalding, James Gilchrist Swan, William Fraser Tolmie, and Henry L. Yesler. Of particular interest is his 1862 draft report on various Native American nations and communities living in Washington Territory including the Quinault Nation, the qʷidiččaʔa·tx̌iq (Makah Indian Tribe), Umatilla, Nimíipuu (Nez Perce Tribe), S’Klallam, Spokane Tribe, the Colville Reservation, dxʷsqʷaliʔ abš (Nisqually Indian Tribe), and Tulalip Tribes.
