Biographical Note

Charles Morey was the Artistic Director to Pioneer Memorial Theatre (PMT), now Pioneer Theatre Company, from 1984-2011. He received a liberal arts education from Dartmouth College and a Masters of Fine Arts in Acting from Columbia University. Morey began his early career as an actor in New York. In the early 1970s, he became involved with the Petersborough Players, a small summer theatre in New Hampshire founded in 1933. Beginning initially as an actor and administrative volunteer, Morey directed his first play in 1974 and was made Artistic Director of the Petersborough Players in 1977. He worked in this capacity from 1977-1984 while acting and guest directing at various university and institutional theatres during winter.

Morey directed his first production at Pioneer Memorial Theatre in 1981 and was hired as the Artistic Director of PMT in 1984. He held duel directorships for several years and resigned from the Petersborough Players in 1987. It was under Morey's direction that PMT became a fully professional theatre. While still incorporating musicals into the theatre's seasons, Morey refocused its repertoire to include plays ranging from the classics, to great American plays, and contemporary and original productions. Morey also adapted several literary works into theatrical productions including: The Three Musketeers,Dracula,The Hunchback of Notre Dame,A Tale of Two Cities,The Count of Monte Cristo, and others. These adaptations were staged by Pioneer Theatre Company as well as several other theatrical institutions across the country. Morey retired as Artistic Director in 2011.

Content Description

The arrangement of this collection reflects Morey's original organization. Folder names are largely those given by Morey and, where they differ, a photocopy of the original title has been included in the file. Three series have been implemented: Personal and professional files, productions directed by Charles Morey, and adaptations by Charles Morey. Morey's personal and professional lives were interconnected and the first series contains general files that pertain to both. It begins with correspondence and the following files are arranged alphabetically. The second series contains production materials of performances directed or overseen by Morey. These materials include directing scripts, casting materials, set and costume design, as well as production reviews and press, and other ephemeral material. The folders bear the production title and are arranged chronologically. The third series contains material relating to adaptations authored by Morey. These materials include research, script drafts and revisions and production materials from stagings of these adaptations.
